• Worldskills UK Caring Competition comes to Exeter for the first time

    08 June 2011

PRESS RELEASE - Exeter College played host to the WorldSkills UK Caring Competition Series on 26 May. The competitions are organised by the National Skills Academy for Social Care in partnership with WorldSkills UK.

All the competitors had to demonstrate the delivery of excellent care in live judged activities as well as written tests. The activities have been devised by the National Skills Academy to replicate situations which competitors should be familiar with from their every day roles.

Three participants from Exeter, Yatton and Axbridge have been awarded first, second and third places in the Hull heat.

    The winners are:

1st Place: Hannah Greenslade from Exeter College

2nd Place: Tracey Park from NQTUK

3rd Place: Kaitlyn Gray from Weston College

The girls were three of the participants who competed in the challenging event in the hopes of winning first, second or third place and progressing to the UK final of the Caring Competition in London in July. They were all delighted to win the awards.

First place winner Hannah Greenslade, said: “I thought that the overall experience of the WorldSkills Caring Competition was brilliant and I got to meet some great people. The constructive feedback that I received from the judges was really helpful and I have applied this in my work placement, which has helped me to deliver better care. It was a brilliant opportunity to compete and I never even thought I'd come within the top three. I was overjoyed and so shocked - I couldn't believe it when I won!”

Lead judge and Skills Academy Consulting Director, Jennifer Bernard, said: “The skill levels demonstrated by our care workers has once again been a pleasure to observe.  We work hard to be sure that we use the same standards in judging our care competitions wherever they are held.  To see competitors confidently showing what they can do when supporting people is a privilege.  Social care has a lot to look forward to from the people who have taken part in Exeter.”

Exeter College was one of four training providers who have hosted the Caring Competition heats across the country. They received a special award from joint competition organisers, WorldSkills UK, designating them as an official host organisation.
