Final heat of WorldSkills UK Caring Competition takes place at Telford College

Last week Telford College of Arts and Technology hosted the third and final regional heat of the WorldSkills UK Caring Competition. The gruelling one-day event brought together care workers from around the country, giving them the opportunity to showcase their excellent caring skills. Competitors hoped for a place in the final, which will take place in London next month.

Bethany Pye, a student at South Devon College won first prize for demonstrating outstanding care, and says of her work: “I enjoy gaining hands on experience with the different situations I come across, as a form of problem solving.”

Second prize went to local competitor Chantelle Challender, who works as deputy manager at a Midlands care home and says “I believe all our residents deserve time, effort and high standards of care...should be treated as individuals and live their lives to the best and I am here to achieve that”.

Laura McKay, third-prize winner, is a care worker for SelfUnlimited in Leicestershire.

Participants demonstrated skills gained in their working life or through their health and social care studies in two situations, the Activities for Daily Living scenario, helping a service user carry out regular tasks, and responding to an Emergency Situation.

  • The third heat of the Caring Competition took place at Telford College on 11th May. Preceding heats were hosted at Leicester College and St Helens College earlier this year. The final of the Caring Competition is in London on 23rd June.
  • Anyone who wins a medal in the final and who will be under 23 in 2011 may be eligible to represent the UK in the international World Skills Caring Competition at WorldSkills London in Autumn 2011.
  • The competition has been open to applications from anyone working in, or training for, the social care sector over the age of 16, with the Skills Academy receiving applications from interested individuals from all over the country.
